Moonlight Film Trip - Details & Homework

Discussion points

I think Chiron is a character of a few words due to the fact that he is afraid to open up to people due to the fact that he is bullied which we see when he is chased by them. The 3 actors use body language to communicate Chiron's emotions by keeping to themselves mostly and sometimes showing a sense of nervousness when it comes to certain situations. He is reluctant to make eye contact with people maybe due to the fear of people reading his emotions through his eyes and with all that he is going through that it the last he wants especially when people think he is weak. However, this could suggest a sense of weakness. I think it was surprising that there was a calm element to the setting and that they weren't a lot of crowded people in the area that was used for filming.
I feel like Juan is significant in making Chiron realise a few things in his life especially that things may not seem the way it does and that the atmosphere around him is more complicated than it is. His influence is felt over the film through despite him being present in the first chapter as it delves more into his mothers drug problem and then in the last chapter Chiron is basically walking in his footsteps and he dislikes his mother just like Juan disliked his parent. The events that took place on the beach were significant in him trying to find himself or whether it played a part in what he did in the future, especially in the last scene where you see a young Chiron turning around as if he is looking back at himself. The final chapter surprised me in the sense that i didn't expect him to go down the 'trapping' route however, due to the fact that he met Juan in the first chapter and then with all the events that occurred throughout the film. I should've expected it to some extent.

Write about it

I think that the film was very well done and the use of vibrant lighting to emphasise different scenes were interesting. I liked how the film was separated into different chapters as it is a unique way of showcasing the different stages of the main protagonists life. I enjoyed watching ans seeing how different things related from each the chapters just like in the last chapter the scene where Chiron is sitting in the cafe and he is listening to door as the camera zooms in on it and how it sounds like the waves of the ocean which relates significantly to the scene as it highlights the scene in chapter 2 where he was on the beach with Kevin and they talked about a place that sounds similar to the waves. There are a lot of close ups in the film which highlights the fact that we are in this journey with Chiron and the fact that there isn't a lot of cuts used could emphasise that point in showing that we are sutured into the narrative especially in the first chapter in the scene where Juan is taking Chiron to his house. We are positioned in the back seat and the camera is pans between the two of them. i think that the ending of the film may hint at a cycle and that just like Juan kind of played a role for Chiron, that he will do the same for someone in the future.

Extension Activities

A few years later i think that the next chapter in his life will still include 'trapping' and that he will in a way still follow in the footsteps of Juan as he was an influence in his childhood. I feel like with the people around him his relationships with his mother will improve and he may become closer to his friend Kevin as he played a part in his journey and discovering who he is. This may also take a turn and may turn into a complicated relationship.
