Summer Project: Proposal

Media text: Hunger Games

Media issue/debate: Gender stereotypes

Link to Media key concepts (MIGRAIN) - Explain the link between each concept and your chosen text/topic.
  • Representation - The main issue and debate I will be looking into is gender stereotypes which comes under representation perfectly as I will be going into detail as to how men and women are portrayed in the film and whether they are subverted or not.
  • Audience - This would link with my chosen topic as I could discuss the effect the representations have on the audience and different audience pleasure they can take from the media text that I have chosen like personal identity and if the audience can identify with certain stereotypes.
  • Narrative - Narrative theories like Barthes enigma and action codes and Propps character theory could link to the topic I could analyse how the characters have been allocated within the film and whether females are more active than men within the film or if it is portrayed equally.
Wider context - impact of text/topic on society: Why is your chosen topic important? What impact does this debate have on audiences or institutions?

  • I think my chosen topic because the representation of gender has been an on-going debate for many years due to the fact that gender inequality is an issue that has changed over the years but hasn't quite been eliminated. Hence the impact on audience and institution in relation to this issue/debate will be interesting to research as I will be able to go into detail on how the audience responds to these changes and how the institutions use these changes to help the profit and gain more popularity.
Linked production: Looking further forward, write a brief description of the media product you intend to make as a linked production to run alongside your investigation.
  • I would like to either make a informational leaflet/booklet or a video production as a linked production that focuses on the issue/debate I will be looking at for the film Hunger Games however, I wont be making that the main focus of the linked production as I will be exploring different media text or even just analysing the change in gender stereotypes over the years and give justified examples from a range of media texts.
