The increase in male patronage isn’t in and of itself a cause of The Hunger Games’ ascendance as a cultural touchstone, but it is a correlation.

Lionsgate Films is a commercial institution as it focuses on
entertainment for the public
in the late 90's/early 2000's Liongate films were began producing and
distributing films that were too controversial for the major American studios.
This could link to the fact that Hunger Games is a film that is open to
interpretation and different views. Also because of the fact that typical
stereotypes are subverted could link to the idea that films that are produced
by Lionsgate are not always sticking to the norms. This allowed it to be successful as nowadays "young adults want different kinds of stories just like adults do." Which is what the institution is offering by presenting this strong female character.
